Private Blog Network (PBN)

A group of websites owned by one person used to build backlinks to a main site. Violates Google guidelines.

A Private Blog Network (PBN) is a collection of websites, typically built on expired domains with existing authority, that are controlled by one person or organisation for the sole purpose of creating backlinks to boost a target site's rankings.

How PBNs work:

Someone buys expired domains that still have authority and backlinks from their previous life. They set up basic WordPress sites with thin content on each one, then add links from all of these sites to their main "money site." Because each domain has some existing authority, the links appear more valuable than typical spam.

How to detect PBN links:

PBN sites often share the same IP address range (because they are hosted on the same server), have similar content patterns, were all registered or acquired around the same time, and link to the same small set of target sites.

Why PBNs are risky:

Google has become very good at detecting PBNs. When caught, every site in the network gets deindexed, and the target sites receive manual penalties. Having backlinks from a detected PBN can severely damage your rankings.

If you find PBN links in your audit:

Disavow them immediately. PBN links are always manipulative and carry high risk.

How Disavow helps:

Our Smart Risk Engine includes IP subnet clustering that groups backlinks by their server network. If many backlinks come from the same IP range, we flag it as a potential link network — one of the classic PBN signals.
