What Is a Disavow File?

A disavow file is a plain text document that you upload to Google Search Console to tell Google to ignore specific backlinks when evaluating your site. It is the official mechanism Google provides for webmasters to distance their site from harmful or manipulative links.

The file follows a strict format: each line contains either a full URL (to disavow a single page) or domain:example.com (to disavow all links from that domain). Comments start with #. The file must be saved as .txt in UTF-8 encoding. Our generator handles all of this formatting for you. Learn more in our complete guide to disavow files.

When Should You Disavow Links?

Google recommends using the disavow tool only in specific situations: when you have received a manual action for unnatural links, when you have a confirmed history of manipulative link building, or when you are under a negative SEO attack with a large volume of spammy links being built to your site.

For most routine cases, Google's algorithms can ignore low-quality links automatically. Our toxic backlink checker helps you determine which links are genuinely harmful and worth disavowing versus those you can safely ignore.

How to Submit a Disavow File to Google

After downloading your file from the generator above, go to the Google Disavow Tool page, select your property, and upload the .txt file. Note that uploading a new file replaces any previous disavow file for that property — it does not merge them.

Google says it can take several weeks to incorporate the file as they recrawl the web. The full impact on rankings typically takes 2-6 months. For a detailed walkthrough, read our step-by-step toxic backlink removal guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a disavow file?

A disavow file is a plain text (.txt) file uploaded to Google Search Console that tells Google to ignore specific backlinks or entire domains when evaluating your site's rankings.

What format does Google require?

Plain text (.txt) in UTF-8 or 7-bit ASCII. Each line contains a URL or domain:example.com. Comments start with #. Our generator handles all formatting automatically.

Should I disavow domains or individual URLs?

In most cases, disavowing entire domains is more effective and future-proof. Only disavow individual URLs when a specific page on an otherwise legitimate domain is problematic.

How long does it take to work?

Google says several weeks to incorporate the file. Full ranking impact typically takes 2-6 months depending on severity.
